The Business Plan

A Business Plan is a written document which develops and details the potential of a new business as well as the knowledge and the credibility of the author.  It is the “road map” the business will follow in the following year or two.

The business plan does a number of things:  It proves that the author has the drive and the knowledge to put the plan together.  It points out to the author what he or she does not yet know about the business, usually finance and/or marketing, and compels them to learn it.  It shows the reader (banker?) that the author understands all aspects of the business.  And, finally, it shows the banker that the author and the business have the character, ability and desire to pay back his loan on time, every time.  Bankers like that.

The best business plans are those completely written by the new business owner because that is the person in need of all of the information the plan develops.  Software is available for help, but is not recommended for this very reason.  A good business plan should not repeat information and should include all of the following sections:

  • Cover Page - company name, author and contact information
  • Table of Contents - because no two business plans are quite the same
  • Executive Summary – normally just 2 paragraphs to describe the business and what the plan is for.  It is the last page written
  • Description of the Business – mission statement, company goals, objectives and philosophy, structure, etc., including its history, if applicable
  • Description of Major Products or Services Offered – advantages, disadvantages, pricing, etc., in good detail.  Suppliers and sales lit, etc. can be appended if they help
  • Operations Plans - layouts, inventory, hours, equipment and labor needs vs. sales
  • Marketing Plans - your industry and your niche, who your customers are, your competition’s good and bad points, details of the where, how, costs and timing of your advertising and publicity releases, etc.
  • Management and Personnel Section - describe the owner’s background and experience, others by title; staffing needs vs. sales and where you’ll find them
  • Financial Statements - as appropriate for the size and scope of the business – startup expenses, cash flow, breakeven, profit & loss, balance sheet, pricing calculations, owner’s personal financial statement, etc.
  • Appendices - contain key supporting documents, drawings, contracts, sales and other literature, etc. which have been referenced and support points made in the text.

“Without question, the Business Plan is the very best tool we have to determine and evaluate the potential of a business!”

About How Big is a Business Plan?

  • Summary Plan – from a few to 15 pages.  Used for startups, bank funding, more modest investment needs, and smaller companies.
  • Full Plan – 20 to 50 or more pages. For major financing, manufacturing companies, and more complex businesses.
  • Operational Plan - Used internally to guide a company and its management on major new product developments, etc.
