Infographic: Where's My Refund?

You’ve submitted your tax return only to find yourself wondering where exactly your refund is. Here are some key facts and actions you can take to help set your mind at ease.

Where's My Refund?90% of tax refunds are issued within 21 days of receipt. If your refund is taking longer than 21 days to arrive, there could be a number of issues:

  • An error holding up the processing of your return
  • Issues that require your return to be reviewed further
  • Incorrect address preventing your refund from being delivered

Hold the Phone! Thinking about calling in to speak to an IRS agent? Think again. IRS representatives can only research inquiries about your return if it’s been…

  • 21 days since you filed a digital return
  • 6 weeks since you mailed in a paper return

What should you do? Visit www.irs.gov/Refunds and use the Where’s My Refund? tool to inquire about the status of your refund. You can also download the IRS2Go app and use the Where’s My Refund? feature.

To use the Where’s My Refund? tool, you’ll need:

  • Your Social Security Number
  • Your tax filing status
  • Your refund amount to the exact whole dollar

With this tool you’ll be able to check the status of your refund

  • 24 hours after submitting an electronic return
  • 4 weeks after submitting a paper return

Use the Where’s My Refund? tool to get notified when…

  • Your return is received
  • Your refund is approved
  • Your refund is sent

Once your refund is approved, the tool will show you a date for completion of your refund. Don’t check Where’s My Refund? more than once every 24 hours. The system is updated each night. An IRS agent will be able to assist you if the Where’s My Refund? tool refers you to a representative.
